Food Safety & Hygiene Training

Food safety qualifications for handlers, supervisors and managers

Food business operators must ensure that food handlers are supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work activity. This requirement comes from Chapter XII of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 (now assimilated law). It is given effect by the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, the Food Hygiene (Scotland) Regulations 2006, the Food Hygiene (Wales) Regulations 2006 and the Food Hygiene Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006, and enforced by local authority environmental health officers with guidance from the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland.

There is no legal requirement to hold a particular certificate, but an accredited qualification is the easiest way for a business to show environmental health officers that staff have been properly trained.
